Beat The Heat With Summertime Tips

With the continuing economic downturn and a growing awareness of global climate change, Americans are increasingly turning to energy-efficient options to save money and do their part to preserve the environment.

Along with an ever-expanding number of efficient products available in stores, there are several low-cost ways that we can keep our homes cool this summer while also lowering our electricity use.

Here are some summertime energy-saving suggestions that you can put into action right away without having to spend a lot of money.

There are several low-cost ways we can keep our homes cool while also lowering our electricity use.

Sunlight shining in windows adds the largest amount of unwanted summer heat to your home, making it harder to keep indoor air cool. Use blinds, shades or drapes to block daytime sun.
  • Most everyone knows to keep windows closed when using an air conditioner. But did you know that those who don’t use air conditioning can help their homes stay a bit cooler during the day with the windows closed, too? Simply close them early – when it starts to get hotter outside than in – and open them again later in the day when the outdoor temperature drops.
  • Using a fan can help make a room feel more comfortable. By creating a wind-chill effect on the skin, a fan set at low speed allows you to turn up the air conditioner thermostat for more energy savings. Better yet, try using a fan instead of the air conditioner whenever possible.
  • Fridges and freezers are among the top energy users in a home. Be sure to keep them full to make the most of your energy dollars. Less energy is used to keep the contents cold than to cool the air that’s inside a half-empty fridge or freezer, especially when the doors are opened during a hot summer day. Jugs of water are a perfect low-cost option to fill the space.

By following these simple suggestions, you’ll be more comfortable this summer while also using less energy. For more energy saving tips and information, click on “Energy Efficiency” in the left-hand side menu above.

In my next column, I’ll discuss why summertime is the right time to get a jump on tightening up your home for the upcoming cool weather.
