Project Will Help Non-Profit Save On Energy Bills For Years To Come

October 23, 2006
In an effort to highlight the benefits of its energy efficiency programs, NSTAR Electric & Gas is performing an Extreme Energy Makeover at the Italian Home for Children’s buildings in Jamaica Plain and East Freetown.  The project will involve a comprehensive energy audit, which will pinpoint all of the potential savings opportunities, followed by the implementation of all recommended improvements.

By upgrading the existing facilities,  NSTAR estimates the Italian Home will not only save money on its utility bills at the four buildings where the energy makeover will take place, but will also benefit from decreased maintenance costs, longer-lasting equipment, as well as an improved living and working environment.

“There has never been a better time for customers to take advantage of the many energy efficiency programs NSTAR has to offer,” said Penni Conner, NSTAR Vice President of Customer Care.  “We are extremely pleased to partner with the Italian Home to help them save money and to also demonstrate just how effective these energy-saving measures can be.”

The project involves improvements in air sealing and insulation as well as the installation of new windows and doors.  The makeover team will also install air conditioning controls and new water heaters and will replace old lighting with new, energy efficient lighting and controls.  Lastly, refrigeration will be upgraded and associated controls will be incorporated.

“Our focus each day is providing for the needs of the children we serve, so it’s sometimes easy to forget about nuts and bolts issues like efficient energy use at our facilities,” said Christopher Small, Executive Director of the Italian Home for Children.  “We couldn’t be happier to be working with NSTAR on this very important project that will not only teach our children about energy efficiency, but will also help us to be more efficient and to save money now and into the future.”

NSTAR is pleased to partner with RISE Engineering, Natural Resource Management and Munro Electrical Supplies on this project.

The Italian Home for Children exists as a resource for children and families in crisis irrespective of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion or national origin.

NSTAR transmits and delivers electricity and natural gas to 1.4 million customers in Eastern and Central Massachusetts, including over one million electric customers in 81 communities and nearly 300,000 gas customers in 51 communities.
