Massachusetts Residents Honored for Commitment to Energy Efficiency

January 18, 2010
Eleven Massachusetts residents have been chosen from a pool of over 450 entries as top energy savers in the Commonwealth. The winners of the year-long “Be Boston’s ENERGY STAR” contest – sponsored by NSTAR, National Grid and CBS Radio – were treated to a celebration at Gillette Stadium that included private tours, celebrity introductions, individual recognition and great prizes.

“The excitement generated by a contest like Be Boston’s ENERGY STAR is contagious,” said Penni Conner, NSTAR’s Vice-President of Customer Care. “Once word got out about the opportunity to share ideas for saving energy, the entries came pouring in.”

“The Be Boston's ENERGY STAR contest was a great way to learn about individual, in-depth energy saving experiences from customers and see their enthusiasm for saving money and the environment. We congratulate the winners and commend their commitment to energy efficiency,” said Tim Stout, vice president, Energy Efficiency for National Grid.

“With groundbreaking utility-run energy efficiency programs on the brink of state approval, Massachusetts is rocketing to the top of the national charts in terms of investing in smart ways to cut energy waste in homes, stores, and offices and public buildings,” Department of Energy Resources Commissioner Phil Giudice said. “I commend the winners of the Boston Energy Star contest for taking the initiative to explore energy efficiency opportunities in their own homes, and hope many other Massachusetts residents will follow their example.”

The number one energy efficiency step listed by contest winners is replacing home appliances with models that have earned the ENERGY STAR rating. Among the other steps cited are switching to compact fluorescent bulbs; adding power strips; lowering room temperatures during the winter and raising them during the summer; and taking advantage of free energy audits offered by NSTAR and National Grid.
