In order to enhance service reliability in the Jamaica Plain area, NSTAR has implemented the Jamaica Plain System Improvement Project. This project is a series of system upgrades and new construction that will ultimately mean better electric service for our Jamaica Plain customers. The work, most of which has already been finished, includes:

  • We have invested in a new $32 million substation on Colburn Street that will benefit Jamaica Plain by enhancing current service as well as prepare for the future needs of the growing neighborhood. This new substation became operational in June 2005.
  • To provide additional capacity and more reliability to our Jamaica Plain customers, we have installed a new electric supply line to our substation on Armory Street as well as replaced supply lines at our Washington Street substation.
  • Ongoing, annual inspections of our overhead and underground electrical system in key areas continue in Jamaica Plain using infrared screening technology. We also regularly visually inspect poles, underground cables, overhead wires and transformers.
  • The Jamaica Plain electric system is currently being converted from a 4 kV system to a more reliable 13.8 kV system, with completion just around the corner.
  • NSTAR is working closely with Boston city officials on a plan to trim trees in certain neighborhoods, including Jamaica Plain. Tree trimming allows for proper clearance between wires and trees while increasing safety and reliability.

We are committed to keeping customers informed about the progress of this project. As work continues and is completed, NSTAR will be regularly updating customers through ads in local papers and this web site. You can read the most recent ads here on these pages.
